Birds

In the territory of “Sevan” national park and in its buffer zone there are 267 bird species, which belong to the following taxonomic Orders:

1.    Grebes (Podicipediformes)

2.    Herons ( Pelecniformes)

3.    Herons, Egrets and Ibis (Ciconiiformes)

4.    Flamingo (Phoenicopetriformes)

5.    Carnivores (Falconiformes)

6.    Geese, Ducks, Swans (Anseriformes)

7.    Gamebirds   (Galliformes)

8.    Cranes, Rails (Gruiformes)

9.    Shorebirds, Gulls and Charadre (Charadriiformes)

10. Pigeons and Doves (Columbiformes)

11. Cuckoos (Cuculiformes)

12. Owl (Strigiformes)

13. Nightjars (Caprimulgiformes)

14. Swifts, Swallow (Apodiformes)

15. Bee-eater, Rollers and Hoopoes (Coraciformes)

16. Woodpeckers (Piciformes)

17. Perching and Songbirds (Passeriformes) 102 species

There are currently 39 bird species found in the national park territory, which are included in the Red book of Armenia. One of them Armenian gull (Laurus armenicus) is an endemic species. 20 species of 267 found in the territory of “Sevan” national park are rare species, but they aren’t recorded in the Red book of Armenia. Those are: red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisengena), great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus ), little egret (Egrettea garzetta) ,black kite (Milvus migrans), Long-legged buzzard(Buteo rufinus), lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina), ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), golden oriole (Oriolus oriolus), simple nightingale (Luscinia luscinia), little ringed plover (Charadrius dubius), black sandpiper (Tringa orchropus), common sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos),common tern (Sterna hirundo), long-eared owl (Asio otus), European  nightjars (Carmulgus europaeus), western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus), northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), great-spotted  woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), Eurasian crag martin (Ptyonoprogne ripestris). In addition black kite, simple nightingale and black sandpiper are migrating but not breeding species in the National Park territory.  Nowadays the state of 39 species recorded in the Red Book of Armenia and namely of 29 species of a vital economic importance remains insufficient and unsatisfactory, because of natural and human negative influence.

Especially endangered are the following species  listed in the Red Book of Armenia  because of their small number and vulnerability of nesting sites, for example common raven (Corvus corax),great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus), grey heron (Ardea cinerea), dalmatian pelican (Pelicanus crispus), great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), whooper swan (Cygnus Cygnus), gadwall(Anas strepera), marbled duck (Anas angustirostris), white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala), Montagu’s harrier (Circus pygargus), European  levant sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes), golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), lanner falcon (Falco biarmicus), peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), common crane (Grus grus), common rock thrush (Monticola saxastilis).
