It is located at the eastern part of the national park, including Artanish peninsula (excluding the left side-community lands of Shorzha village) and the Artanish lake recess adjacent to the peninsula. The area covers 3640 ha square, of which 2142 ha- terrestrial and 1498 ha- aquatic. The total length of the boundary is 25.9 km. The area of the reserve stretches with 11.7 km length and 7.8 km width.

The objective of the reserve is to ensure conservation of diverse relict plant species before the glacial epoch, rare juniper forests and steppes of Artanish peninsula and conservation of migration routed for unique animal species (brown bear, roe deer, goat, boar, red deer(Capra aegagrus , Cervus elaphus, etc).
